So we have babies!
We timed this litter for half term so that I would be home and with Aashini. As soon as I booked my speed awareness course for the Monday morning though I knew that would be the time! Sods law. Luckily it was an online course so I was able to comfort Aashini with one hand while holding my phone with the other and managing to look like I was fully concentrating on traffic calming measures in 20 zones.
The labour started well but then something 'popped' (maybe an empty sac but I didn't know about those at the time) and then everything stopped. I'm still a 'new mum' when it comes to cats so I worried and took Aashini to the vets. The vet gave an injection of oxytocin and labour recommenced immediately meaning we were now stuck there for the duration. Luckily Leek Vets are amazing and supportive and let us bed down in a back room so that Aashini could deliver. They even made me a cup of tea. ❤️
Then the babies came. It's such a nerve wracking, exciting and wonderful moment. The first was a mini Aashini. A dark charcoal baby like mummy. Aashini was smitten from the moment she saw her and purred away washing her. I think if I am to be reincarnated as a cat I'd like to be the first born of the litter. The first gets fluffed up and pampered and their choice of nipple from the milk bar... by the time Aashini delivered number 8 she barely noticed the little squeak and I dried it and put it to the nipple myself. 🙂
Eventually we spied a break between babies and took Aashini home. We got her and the pumpkins settled for the night on nice fresh blankets. Unfortunately not all the placenta had been delivered so there were 3 days of antibiotics and tube feeding every 2 hours day and night but that's why there's a sofa bed in the kittening room right!
We are nearly 4 weeks on now and the babies are growing beautifully. They will be advertised in the next couple of days and will go to their new homes at the end of January (although one might accidentally get left behind here!)
